One of the themes I like to write about is the power of music. When my son began playing the bagpipes at St. Thomas Episcopal School, I was amazed at the powerful sound, and I became curious about the history of the instrument. My research led me to a two-part film called Instrument of War: Part I – Ladies from Hell, and Part II – Call to the Blood.

“Ladies from Hell” is what the Germans called the kilted pipers coming at them on the battlefield.

I thought the pipes would be easy for me to play, since I’m a wind-player, a flutist. But, as they say in New York, fuhgettaboudit, I don’t have the upper-body strength.

If you’re curious about pipers, I hope you will check out the two short films, available to watch on YouTube.

If you’re curious as to what pipers wear under those kilts, suffice it to say that certain mysteries should remain mysteries.
